The Shire of Shadowdale is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), centered in Iowa City, IA and including Johnson and parts of Cedar County. The SCA is a world-wide non-profit living history organization devoted to the study and re-creation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (covering the time period from 600-1600 AD). We are largely a group of part time scholars who emphasize re-creative and experimental techniques to learn about the past. The SCA as a whole studies nearly every aspect of our “period” including clothing, food, drink, heraldry, archery, and martial arts. Members are also involved in many more activities.
Internationally, the SCA is divided into 20 different kingdoms. The Shire of Shadowdale is part of the Kingdom of Calontir.
Our group hosts meetings on the first and third Monday of each month (excluding holidays) at the Iowa City Public Library as well as weekly archery and fencing practices. Check out our calendar below to see our upcoming local meetings and practices or the Kingdom of Calontir Calendar to see a listing of upcoming weekend events.
